Evidence synthesis in toxicology: what it is, how it's used, and how to do it better

Evidence syntheses are a diverse set of methodologies which are primarily designed to integrate findings from multiple studies. At their best, they can be used as a cornerstone to direct future research and help inform evidence-based policies. Yet, at their worst, they can be misleading and riddled with subjective bias while projecting the illusion of objective authority.

My research primarily applies evidence synthesis methods to the impacts of pesticides, investigates how these methodologies have been used in toxicology, and develops new approaches to improve their utility for directing future research and informing evidence-based policy.

In this talk, I'll unpack what evidence syntheses actually are, walk through how they've been applied, and misapplied, in toxicology, and share the tools and guidelines my group at the Collaboration for Open Science and Synthesis in Ecology and Evolution (COSSEE) is developing to make them more rigorous and trustworthy going forward.
